Code Of Conduct

BRC Code of Conduct

Introduction

This Code of Conduct has been developed after extensive discussion with the aim of clarifying the BRC's expectations for all participants in events under its jurisdiction. It provides guidelines for the use of modern forms of communication, including social media.

Why Do We Need This Code?

In today's rapidly evolving technological landscape, we are increasingly interconnected and subject to public scrutiny. While technology offers numerous benefits, it also presents challenges in how we perceive and interact within the rabbit breeding community. This Code of Conduct aims to:

  • Promote a Positive Image: Foster a positive public image of rabbit breeding, the BRC, its officials, judges, and members.
  • Ensure Ethical Conduct: Establish ethical guidelines for behaviour within the rabbit breeding community.
  • Create a Welcoming Environment: Promote a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all participants at BRC events.
  • Protect the Welfare of Rabbits: Uphold the highest standards of animal welfare at all times.

This document is not intended to be punitive or restrictive. It serves as a guide to help us all understand and uphold the BRC's core values of respect, cooperation, and ethical conduct.

Expectations for All Participants

  • Safety and Welfare: The safety and well-being of all individuals and rabbits at BRC events are paramount.
  • Responsible Conduct: All exhibitors and visitors are expected to conduct themselves responsibly and respectfully at all times.
  • Sportsmanship: Exhibitors should demonstrate good sportsmanship, accepting both wins and losses gracefully. Respect the decisions of judges and officials.
  • Respectful Communication: Engage in respectful and constructive discussions. Avoid heated arguments or confrontations, especially during judging. Address any concerns or questions politely and professionally after judging is completed.
  • Children: Supervise children at all times. Encourage respectful interactions with rabbits and other exhibitors. Always obtain permission before touching or handling another person's rabbit.
  • Mobile Devices: Minimize the use of mobile phones and other electronic devices during judging. Switch off or silence your phone whenever possible.

Harassment

The BRC has a zero-tolerance policy for any form of harassment, including but not limited to:

  • Verbal abuse: Using offensive language, making derogatory comments, or engaging in threats.
  • Physical intimidation: Any form of physical intimidation or aggression.
  • Discrimination: Discriminatory behaviour based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or any other protected characteristic.

Harassment is unacceptable and may have serious consequences, including disciplinary action by the BRC and potentially legal action.

Use of Social Media

The use of social media platforms has become an integral part of modern life. However, it is crucial to use these platforms responsibly and ethically.

  • General Guidelines:

    • Consider your audience: Before posting anything online, ask yourself: "Would I say this to this person face-to-face?"
    • Respect privacy: Avoid sharing confidential or personal information about others without their consent.
    • Think before you post: Remember that social media posts are public and can be easily shared and archived.
    • Be mindful of your words: Avoid using offensive language, making personal attacks, or spreading misinformation.
    • Respect differing opinions: Engage in respectful and constructive discussions, even when you disagree with others.
  • Liability: Be mindful of the potential legal and reputational implications of your online activity. You are responsible for the content you post.

  • Accuracy: Ensure the accuracy of information before posting. If you make a mistake, acknowledge it promptly and issue a correction.

  • Respectful Communication: Treat others with respect and consideration, both online and offline.

This Code of Conduct serves as a framework for ethical and responsible behaviour within the rabbit breeding community. By adhering to these guidelines, we can create a more positive, inclusive, and enjoyable experience for all members.
