The British Rabbit Council Today: A Modern Approach to Rabbit-Keeping

Today, the BRC recognizes the evolving role of rabbits as beloved pets and actively promotes responsible rabbit-keeping among pet owners. The Newark Head Office receives a significant volume of inquiries each month, including letters, phone calls, and emails, seeking advice and information on a wide range of topics related to rabbit care, health, and behaviour. These inquiries come not only from individual pet owners but also from official bodies, government agencies, and international organizations, highlighting the BRC's growing influence and expertise.

In the late 1990s, the BRC proactively engaged in the international rabbit community, attending an international convention to solidify its position as a leading European rabbit organization. This proactive approach reflects the BRC's commitment to staying at the forefront of rabbit-keeping practices and engaging with the global community.

While maintaining its core function as the governing body for "The Fancy," the BRC has established a comprehensive set of Show Rules and Regulations for its members. These rules ensure fair competition and uphold the highest standards of animal welfare within the show ring. With approximately 1,000 rabbit shows taking place across Great Britain each year, the BRC plays a vital role in supporting and regulating these events.

The "bible" for rabbit showing remains the Breeds Standard Booklet, which outlines the expected standards for all recognized breeds within the association. This invaluable resource, readily available on the BRC website, serves as a crucial reference for breeders and exhibitors. The BRC also maintains a comprehensive library of books and resources related to rabbit keeping, providing a valuable resource for members and the wider rabbit community.

The British Rabbit Council is an organization built upon the dedication and passion of its members. It is their collective efforts that drive the organization forward. For many members, being part of the BRC is not only a source of enjoyment but also a way to give back to the community and contribute to the well-being of rabbits.
